Six Incredible Vintage Baseball Cards Recently Certified by CSG

Sports card collecting today is not solely focused on the latest modern sets and the hottest new players. Vintage sports card collecting continues to be popular and important to the hobby. Because only a small portion of these early cards have survived, however, they are growing increasingly hard to get.

Certified Sports Guaranty® (CSG®) recently certified six legendary cards from some of the most sought-after baseball card sets ever produced, which are also some of the most difficult-to-find cards from these sets.

CSG graded these Ty Cobb cards each a CSG 2. The first is a 1911 T205 Gold Border Ty Cobb card featuring the Honest Long Cut back. The card features Cobb’s portrait inside of a red diamond on a green background surrounded by the iconic gold border. The second card is a 1909-11 T206 Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder variation. The T206 set features four Ty Cobb cards: Red background, Green background, Bat On Shoulder and the card pictured here, Bat Off Shoulder.

This #92 Lou Gehrig card graded CSG 3 is from the 1933 Goudy set and shows Gehrig at bat in the classic pin-striped Yankee uniform against a blue background. Examples of the 1933 Goudey #92 Gehrig card in similar grades have sold on eBay for well over $3,000. Meanwhile, CSG graded this 1934 Goudy #37 Lou Gehrig card a CSG 3.5.

CSG graded this 1933 Goudey #144 Babe Ruth a CSG 1. The 1933 Goudey set features four varieties of Babe Ruth cards. Known as the Ruth Quartet, they show the “Sultan of Swat” from the waist up on a Yellow background, Red background or Green background, and this CSG-certified card is Full Body Ruth.

CSG graded this 1941 Play Ball #71 Joe DiMaggio a CSG 3. While it is not his rookie card, it is one of the most popular DiMaggio cards ever produced. Limited to only 72 cards, the set by Gum Inc. is believed to be from the start of World War II in America. It was likely meant to be much larger, including additional sports stars, celebrities and other heroes of the day.
