The 1991 NBA Finals, which saw the Bulls defeat the Los Angeles Lakers 4-1, was historic for a number of reasons. It was the first time that Jordan, who was in his seventh NBA season, would appear in the Finals. And it was the last Finals appearance for Laker’s superstar Earvin “Magic” Johnson. Jordan was awarded his first Finals MVP, something he would achieve five more times in his career, as he led the Bulls to the franchise’s first NBA Finals victory.

By Game 5 of the series, the Lakers were playing with a severe disadvantage. Two of their starters — James Worthy and Byron Scott — had exited the series with injuries at the end of Game 4. Magic Johnson turned in a heroic effort, providing the Lakers with 20 assists and 11 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to best the Bulls. Scottie Pippen, who was a key factor in Bull’s dominance in the 1990s, led the team with 32 points and 13 rebounds during the game. Jordan scored 30 and delivered 10 assists.

The shoes worn by Jordan during Game 5 are known as the Nike Air Jordan VI. They were designed by Tinker Hatfield, Nike’s Vice President for Design and Special Projects. Hatfield is said to have modeled the design of the shoe after Jordan’s Porsche 911, which was Jordan's favorite car at the time. The color scheme of the shoe is known as the “Infrared,” and it features the iconic Nike Jumpman logo on the sole.

The G.O.A.T. had arrived.
